January 16th, 2020 (SSNN)—The Minister in the office of the President, Mayiik Ayii Deng has discussed the progress made in the implementation of the peace deal with the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria, South Africa.

“The Minister in the office of the President, Mayiik Ayii Deng as Special Envoy of President Salva Kiir met with President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria South Africa,” the Presidency said in its statement.

Adding that, “The Minister briefed President of South Africa on the progress made so far in the implementation of the Revitalized peace agreement.”

The official’s visit remains unclear, but observers believe the move was an attempt by the Kiir administration to persuade the South African government to support the 32 states.

South Africa is the chair of the African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan (C5), a regional body comprising of five member states: South Africa as Chair, Algeria, Chad, Nigeria and Rwanda.

In July last year, the C5 issued a statement, expressing concern over the slow pace of the implementation of the peace agreement and urging the parties to resolve outstanding issues amicably.

It further urged the Kiir administration to urgently mobilize and disburse the required funding for implementation of the peace agreement.

The committee noted that there is a need to generate further impetus into the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement.
