Kenya recalls R-JMEC chairperson Njoroge
May 11, 2020 (SSNN) — Kenya has recalled the chairperson of South Sudan’s Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC) Amb. Augustino Njoroge and said it was replacing him with another Kenyan military official.
Njoroge was appointed by the regional body, IGAD, as deputy chairperson of JMEC shortly before the formation of the defunct Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) in 2016.
In 2018, he replaced Festus Mugai to serve as the interim chairperson of the peace monitoring body.
In a letter addressed to IGAD Secretariat and obtained by South Sudan News Now (SSNN), the Kenyan foreign ministry said it recalls Njoroge and replaces him with General Charles Tai Gitua who would serve as the new interim chairperson.
“After four years of service, the Government of Kenya has decided to recall Amb. Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Augostino Njoroge, and has nominated Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Charles Tai Gituai as the new interim Chairperson of the R-JMEC to take over with immediate effect,” the Kenyan foreign ministry letter reads in part.
“Gen. (Rtd.) Gituai brings to the position a wealth of relevant experience and strategic leadership gleaned from similar and related placements,” it adds.
The foreign ministry expressed confidence “that the new interim Chairperson will offer effective leadership and direction to R-JMEC to consolidate the progress made thus far and to advance the mandate of R-JMEC to support the next phase of the Peace Process..”
“Consequently, the Government of Kenya will be grateful if the Secretariat would facilitate a smooth transition and handover of office to the new interim Chairperson and accord him the necessary support.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Secretariat of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) the assurances of its highest consideration.”
