January 14th, 2020 (SSNN)—In the wake of today’s incidents and heavy shootouts in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued travel advisory, urging Britons living in Sudan to remain vigilant and strictly observe safety precautions in certain parts of the country.

“There were incidents of gunfire and a heavy security presence in and around Khartoum (primarily Riyadh, Kafouri and Soba districts) on 14 January 2020,” the Foreign and Commonwealth Office warned on Tuesday.

FCO states that although there has been relative calm in Sudan for several months, British citizens must remain on high alert and closely monitor the security situation.

“While the broader political and security situation in Sudan has stabilised you should continue to maintain a high level of vigilance across the country, avoid all protests and large gatherings, monitor developments closely and follow the instructions of local authorities and security services.”

The British government further said that, in light of the recent shootings at military bases, there is a possibility that terrorist groups may carry out vicious attacks on foreign nationals in Sudan.

“Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Sudan. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.”

Heavy gunfire broke out on Tuesday in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, causing panic across the country that the country would return to violence.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, in a statement assured the general public that the rebellion instigated by certain elements of former Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has been foiled, and those behind the attack must face justice.

“The events that occurred today are under control,” Hamdok assured the public. “We renew our confidence in the armed forces contain the situation,” he added.

Sudan’s authorities believe that ex-spy chief Salah Abdalla Gosh was the ringleader behind the attacks on the Sudanese security forces.
