January 11th, 2020 (SSNN)—Infants as young as three months and lactating mothers have been spotted at different cantonment sites in South Sudan, however, the main opposition group, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-IO, justified their presence, noting that there are female soldiers who come along with their children in the cantonment areas.

“Some soldiers are women with little kids that is why we have children in the cantonment sites,” Lam Paul Gabriel spokesperson for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-IO told Radio Miraya in an exclusive interview.

South Sudan’s government and opposition groups signed a peace agreement in September 2018, aimed at ending a devastating conflict that has killed nearly 400,000 people and displaced millions from their homes since 2013.

Last week, more than six hundred troops from the SPLA-IO were transported from their military bases to training centers as part of the Security Arrangements provided for in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

In November last year, South Sudan government and opposition groups agreed to delay the formation of a unity government for 100 days after the leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army – IO threatened to pull out from the peace process if security arrangements and other outstanding tasks were not resolved.

The Number of States and their Boundaries and the security arrangements are some of the key outstanding tasks that are supposed to be completed within the 100 days.
