Dec 6th, 2019 (SSNN)-The global leading research and advocacy group, the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P) is calling on the Kiir administration to desist from the ongoing recruitment and training of armed forces, and embark on promoting peace in the country.

“The government must immediately halt the forced recruitment of armed forces and deliver on the promises it made to its own people and to the world when it signed the R-ARCSS,” the group said in a new report.

The advocacy group recommended that the UNSC should impose targeted sanctions on South Sudan’s leaders who continue to undermine the implementation of the peace agreement.

“The UNSC should immediately adopt targeted sanctions against those who continue to threaten the peace and security of South Sudan and push for the full and expeditious implementation of the peace agreement,” the GCR2P recommended.

Adding that, “The regional Intergovernmental Authority on Development should also work closely with political leaders in South Sudan to ensure the timely resolution of all outstanding political issues.”

In recent weeks, the UN experts have accused South Sudan’s government of forcibly recruiting unarmed civilians into the national security forces, a report believed by international observers as a fresh violation of the peace deal.

According to the UN Panel of Experts on South Sudan, “the Government has demonstrated little interest in abiding by the letter or spirit of the agreement on security arrangements, the number of States and their boundaries, and financial accountability.”

Last month, the United Nations Security Council expressed disappointment after the Parties failed to form a unity government on November 12th.
