June 18, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan government has refused to hand over the body of Kerbino Wol, the opposition leader who was killed last week by the army in the country’s Lakes state, a family member has said.

Wol – a prominent businessman and former National Security officer who formed a rebel group against President Salva Kiir Mayardit on April 5 – was killed in an area in eastern Lakes State.

He was killed along with the commander of the Gelweng militia group, Monydiar Maker whom the South Sudan army had accused of hiding him in his village in the state’s Rumbek East Country.

Speaking to South Sudan News Now this afternoon, a member of Kerbino’s family said the army in Lakes refused to hand over Kerbino’s body and that they warned that anyone who will continue to talk on the issue will be considered a rebel.

“They have refused. We haven’t seen his body and they are saying any person who will continue to ask for his body will be considered as a rebel,” the family member said from Rumbek on condition of anonymity.
