May 14, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan government has – for the first time – confirmed its first death as a direct result of the novel coronavirus.

The ministry of health making the announcement this evening also said 28 more people have tested positive for the virus.

This, the ministry of health said, brings the number of those infected with the virus since the first discovery in March, to 231.

The government did not however identified the person who died of the virus but South Sudan senior military commander Brigadier General John  Madeng Gatduel died of coronavirus at the military hospital in Juba.

Medical staff have complained of negligence and have claimed that the government was not reporting COVID-19-related deaths which they said could have raised awareness within the country against the disease.
