Government wants to absorb us in order to maintain status quo.
October 18th 2019 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group SPLM-IO says they will not be a part of any government formed without addressing the pending issues, a senior opposition figure said.
Hendry Odwar, SPLM-IO deputy chairperson said over the weekend that they will only accept an extension of the pre-transitional period.
Odwar who was speaking during a general conference conducted in Calgary, Canada.
“The SPLM-IO may accept little extension if the SPLM-IO believes that there will be changes in line with agreement,” Odwar said.
Hon. Odwar stressed that the opposition group will not accept any blind suggestion from any body that the “rest will be discussed later after the TGNU is formed”.
“We will not form the government on November 12, 2019. The government wants to absorb us in order to maintain status quo.”
“We would rather talk about everything right now. After the government is formed we will not get to talk about anything at all. We better do that now or never.”
Odwar said the parties have made little progress in cantoning the forces and perhaps a little more extension could resolve the remaining challenges.
The world’s youngest nation, South Sudan, returned to war two years after her independence in December 2013.
Several attempts to reconcile the warring leaders have failed, however, the South Sudanese could have one more chance if the government and oppositions resolve the pending issues that include security arrangement and number of states.
