General Cirilo’s forces besiege Juba, warns against travel
May 12, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s holdout opposition group, National Salvation Front (NAS), led by General Thomas Cirilo said on Tuesday that all roads leading to Juba were under siege warning against all travel outside South Sudan’s capital.
NAS said the measure, which came after joint government and SPLA-IO offensives against holdout opposition forces in central Equatoria, is aimed at protecting civilians from “imminent atrocities” arising from the government attacks.
“The National Salvation Front (NAS) is strongly advising civilians to avoid all types of travel on roads leading in and out of the capital Juba due to the ongoing joint military offensive by Kiir’s SSPDF and Machar’s SPLA-IO on NAS positions,” Muslim Gore, a media official for Cirilo said in a statement.
“The advice is also aimed at protecting civilians from imminent atrocities by these joint forces after the SSPDF, on May 04, barred UNMISS and all other NGOs traveling along these roads – a move that provides cover while denying these NGOs access and evidence of the humanitarian catastrophe in the making,” added Gore.
