France highly welcomes formation of unity government, pledges to support peace

February 24, 2020 (SSNN)–The French government has joined the rest of the world in welcoming the formation of the new transitional government of national unity announced over the weekend.

“France welcomes the formation of a transitional government of national unity in South Sudan, achieved through the compromise efforts of all the South Sudanese parties,” the statement partly reads.

Adding that, “This encouraging first step should make it possible to move resolutely forward toward a lasting peace in that country.”

The French government is optimistic that the new unity government will certainly enable the necessary reforms, accountability, especially the Transitional Justice stipulated in the agreement as well as Transparency and Good Governance.

“During the transition period that has just begun, the new government will have a crucial role to play in implementing the reforms agreed to in the revitalized peace agreement of 2018, particularly transitional justice, accountability, and the transparency of public finances.”

It expressed its readiness to give full support to the people of South Sudan during the transitional period.

“France stands with the South Sudanese to support them in this new transition phase.”

“It reaffirms its support for the efforts of the countries in the region, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union to support the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.”
