January 16th, 2020 (SSNN)—The Inspector General of Police Majak Akec Malok has urged the opposition police unit, SPLA-IO, to put the past behind and focus on supporting peace and reconciliation efforts in the country.

The IGP, Akec made the remarks on Thursday while briefing about 2,000 police officers from the opposition forces who had been undergoing training at the Rajaf Police Training Center.

“The Inspector General of police Gen Majak Akec Malok has called on the IO integrated police to forget of the past and open a new chapter of peace and reconciliation among themselves, the Police Chief made the appeal while addressing over two thousand opposition police personnel at rajaf police training center on Thursday.”

He called on the opposition’s police officers to cooperate with their instructor and avoid tribalism during the training process.

South Sudan’s parties signed a peace agreement in 2018, largely ending years of bloody conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people from the country.

The parties were expected to carry out all pre-transitional tasks within 14 months following the signing of the R-ARCSS, but lack of trust, untimely disbursement of funds, lack of political will are some of the factors, affecting the speedy implementation of the peace deal.
