June 29, 2020 (SSNN) – Agel Ring Machar, the former press secretary for ex-first vice president, and now vice-president, Taban Deng Gai, has expressed his disagreement with the ongoing disarmament campaign in Greater Tonj of Warrap state.

This comes after the South Sudan army’s intelligence chief; Lt. Gen. Ring Tueny Mabor said a disarmament campaign has kicked off in Tonj and that other parts of the country will follow.

However, in a brief social media statement, Agel Machar, said civilians in Tonj should not be disarmed because the army does not protect them. He said should that be the case, more lives will be lost as results.

“If our plan is to disarm civilians without simultaneously removing the threats or the reasons that forced them to acquire arms in the first place, which is the protection of their lives, loved ones and properties then we don’t have a successful plan, I’m afraid,” he said.

He added that the civilians in the area “will remain heavily armed after this “disarmament” exercise as usual.”
