May 14, 2020 (SSNN) – Former South Sudan military chief Marial Nuor has died of coronavirus in the capital Juba this afternoon, a close military official said.

“General Marial died this morning. He got infected with coronavirus last week. He was being treated at Lou Clinic here in Juba and when his situation got worse, he was taken to military hospital in Qiada and his situation got worse at dawn today and died a few hours later,” the source said from Bilpam.

However, a relative of Marial who was quoted by the Eye Radio said the ex-military intelligence head died of heart attack saying Marial had been poisoned in 2010 and throughout the last week, his situation got worse and was rushed to the hospital where he would die.

“General Marial got sick a week ago, he was suffering from his previous poison that happened in 2010, and then lastly yesterday we discovered that he was not normal and then we decided to take him for tests and then in the morning his condition was not getting ok, so we rushed him to Giada Military Hospital where he passed away with a heart attack,” Thon Chagai, Marial’s cousin was quoted as saying.

Marial’s death came a day after the death of a senior military official, John Madeng Gatduel, who died at the military Hospital on Wednesday of coronavirus.

Marial served as the country’s military chief until September 2017 and moved to the ministry of foreign affairs as grad three ambassador.
