April 20, 2020(SSNN) — Responding to defection of SPLM/A(IO) senior politicians led by Hon. Dak Duop Bichiok, a group of Eastern Jikany Nuer politicians have spoken.

The group cited a conference held by Hon. Dak Duop on April 16, 2020 and condemn it in the strongest terms possible.

“Given the totality of the circumstances under which the defection was declared, it is obvious that marginalization of colleagues in major decisions that the group has alleged must be connected with the recent appointment of ministers and deputies” The group said.

The “Eastern Jikany Nuer politicians” accused the former minister of petroleum for defecting because he wasn’t appointed to the same ministry he abandoned in 2016.

“They wanted to insinuate that the decision to leave them out of the ministerial portfolios was a result of marginalization in the decision leading to the nominations” The group continued.

“But the truth of the matter is that the SPLM/A(IO) leadership with Comrade Dak Duop Bichiok in attendance met at Pyramid International Hotel and decided that constituencies across the country should conduct consultation meetings and nominate individuals for ministerial positions” Read part of the statement.

The group explains that Hon. Dak’s decision was accepted and consultation was done; however, the Eastern Jikany Nuer politicians disagreed on candidates.

As a result, the Eastern Jikany Nuer submitted 11 candidates that include Hon. Dak Duop Bichiok and Dobuol Luelweng.

The group claims that instead Machar appointed the youth league chairperson, Mr. Puot Kang Chuol, as the new minister of petroleum.

“The idea that the chairman takes influential positions and resources through proxies is rather silly. The positions that the Agreement allocates to the SPLM/A(IO) are for the Movement as a party to the Agreement.” The Group explains.

“The truth of the matter is that these individual members of this group defected to pursue personal interests. They just had to force themselves to concoct an accusatory statement in an attempt to justify a selfish defection. As such, they are peace spoilers who defected from the SPLM/A(IO) because the two leading members of the group failed to secure appointment to the ministerial portfolio that was given to Comrade Puot Kang Chuol” The group said.

“The group should be reminded that Comrade Dak Duop Bichiok was the reason that triggered the 2016 conflict. His appointment as Minister of Petroleum was what angered those who had wanted who had wanted to take the petroleum portfolio” The group claims.

The group accused defected former minister of causing trouble because he was left out of the ministerial appointments.

“But, now the same Dak Duop Bichiok has a problem with the SPLM/A(IO) for nominating and appointing someone else among the members of the Eastern Jikany other than himself. This is a very bad case of self-seeking” The group said.

“We do condemn the defection of Dak Duop Bichiok and members of his team in the strongest terms possible. There has never been any occasion where the Eastern Jikany decided that only Dak Duop Bichiok should always be appointed minister in that constituency,” The statement continued.

“He must go only with those nine individuals who have now chosen to subscribe to the principle of self-seeking. It is our genuine belief that the case cause for which the SPLM/A(IO) was formed should guide us in all the decision that we make in this Movement. This is the position of our downtrodden people in their poverty-stricken villages in Longechuk, Maiwut, Nasir and Ulangh Counties” They said.

The group was made up of 32 individuals that include Puot Kang Chol, the current Minister of Petroleum, Hon Wiu Kuon Kuiyang, Hon. Gatwech Lam Puoch, Hon. Reath Muoch Tang, Hon. Peter Charlem Chawach, Riang Yer Zuor Nyak, Moses MaleK Chuol, David Gatwech Lok and others.

Hon. Dak was appointed the Minister of Petroleum by Dr. Machar in 2016; however, his appointment is believed to have led defection of Taban Deng Gai and Lol Gatkuoth.

Despites Hon. Dak defected with Dr. Machar again in 2016 and abandoned the position that was later given to Hon. Lol Gatkuoth.
