Dr. Lam urges “thorough” investigation into Sherikat incident
June 5, 2020 (SSNN) – Prominent South Sudan opposition and National Democratic Movement (NDM) leader Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin has called for what he said should be a thorough investigation into Sherikat’s Tuesday killing by a member of the army.
Lt. Col. Lual Akook Wol Kiir, a cousin to President Salva Kiir opened fire on Tuesday mornig against a group of family members killing at least five people.
The killing by Lual, who later died of injuries following beating by angry protesters who took to the street to denounce his actions, sparked controversy in South Sudan and reopened conversation over brutality of Kiir’s armed relatives against unarmed public.
Demonstrations in both Juba and Bor – and also other parts of the country – called for actions forcing president Salva Kiir to form investigation committee to find circumstances in which the five people were killed.
In a tweet, Dr. Lam denounced the killing and urged the government of president Salva Kiir Mayardit to open investigations into the incident.
“The incident in Sherikat yesterday laid bare the vulnerability of our law-abiding people to those who pay no heed to the rule of law,” the opposition leader wrote.
