Dr. Lam mocks Denay Chagor for backtracking on his age
June 30, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s prominent opposition leader Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin who is also the chairperson of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) has mocked Denay Jok Chagor for claiming that his age was written wrongly in his national documents.
Yesterday, Chagor was quoted by a section of the media as saying that his age was written wrongly in his passport and nationality certificate which he initially obtained in Khartoum before the separation of South Sudan and that he was not born in 1986, as appears on his documents, but in 1975.
Chagor who is also the minister of higher education did not however clarify in the quoted interview as to why his age was written wrongly in the important documents until when a serious debate on who should be appointed as governor of Jonglei state commence.
In response, Dr. Lam Akol who is also the Secretary-General of South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) criticized Chagor’s making and highlighted abuse of public offices in the world’s youngest country.
“Now the young man has suddenly discovered that his age was written wrongly in his documents,” the prominent politician said.
“All this time the age didn’t matter, in fact was useful to pass as youth! Can’t you see the allure of public office? Can’t you also see another more serious matter?” he asked.

In recent days, the opposition consortium has been in internal wrangling over who is appointed the governor of Jonglei state. Akol has nominated his group’s secretary-general for the governorship, but some members of the Alliance wants Chagor appointed to the state portfolio.
However, it has appeared that Chagor is under the age of 40, which is required by the transitional constitution of South Sudan, giving more chances to Akol’s nominee for the state.
