Differences emerge between al-Burhan, Hemeti over curfew extension

June 3, 2020 (SSNN) – Fresh differences have emerged between Sudan’s military ruler, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his deputy General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo who is better known as Hemeti, over the extension of the lockdown curfew, sources with direct knowledge said.

One source said Hemeti was opposed to the curfew of extension which is also opposed by many citizens and told al-Burhan that it was necessary for the curfew to remain in place as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise despite being in place.

“The first deputy chair of the Council (Hemeti) has expressed his disagreement with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan over his decision to extend the curfew,” the source said from the capital Khartoum.

“Hemeti believes that it is not the right time to continue the curfew and he is not happy because he had informed al-Burhan before the extension [of the curfew],” the source added.

Al-Burhan has direct the security and defense chiefs to extends the curfew which was imposed about three months ago to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The curfew will remain in place until June 18.

But it allowed for more movement in the city from 6am to 3pm on condition that residents adhere to safety and health regulations.

It is the the third extension of the lockdown since the country’s authorities announced a plan to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Health confirmed on Sunday that the total number of coronavirus infections had increased to 5,026.

The number of recoveries rose to 1,423 while the death toll stood at 286.

The Health Ministry urged residents to adhere to the health and safety guidelines and to promptly report suspected cases of Covid-19 to curb the spread of the virus.
