Civil society groups condemn violence between refugees and host community in Uganda

Dec 15th, 2019 (SSNN) – The Network of South Sudan Civil Society Organizations in Uganda (NoSSCOU) a leading member of Refugees-Led Organizations Network in Uganda – has condemned violence between South Sudanese refugees and the host community especially the Madi tribe of Uganda.

Last week, an incident occurred when a Madi man was killed in a nearby camp by unknown people and people from the host community believe that the deceased was killed by South Sudanese refugees at the Nyumauzi refugee settlement camp, in Adjumani district.

“At NoSSCOU, we would like to express deeply sorrow and strongly condemned the current escalating clashes that occurred on December 10, 2019.”

The activists expressed their dismay at the incident, which involved refugees and the host community, and urged all warring parties to refrain from violent confrontations and find an amicable way to resolve the issue.

“The ongoing clashes is worrying and need a high attention of all leaders and organizations , this clashes, and violence is unacceptable and is not the only way to address the differences among the South Sudanese refugees and the host community ( Madi tribe) of Uganda.”

“We believe, they will be a peaceful negotiation that can bring stable coexistence among refugees and the host community,” said the statement extended to SSNN.

Ter Manyang Gatwech, NoSSCOU’s Coordinator urged both South Sudanese refugees and the host community to desist from deadly violence and amicably resolve their issues in a peaceful manner.

“We urge the UNHRC, OPM and authorities to urgently rescue the situation by providing the necessary medical assistant and mass protection and grantee the free movement to refugees, and bring up together the two parties to end these senseless killing by bringing the Perpetrators to account.”

The human rights activist, Manyang called on the Ugandan government to protect refugees from attacks and ensure that their belongings are not subjected to rampant looting by the host community.

“We urge the government of Uganda to stable and calm the situation and ensure that lives of the people and properties are fully protected.”
