China urges South Sudan’s leaders to implement peace deal
December 18th, 2019 (SSNN)-The Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Wu Haitao told members of the United Nations Security Council during a high-level forum on South Sudan that, the country’s stability lies in the hands of its political and military leaders, stressing that maintaining the R-ARCSS remains a first priority.
The Chinese diplomat noted that his government is working around the clock to intensify efforts and is ready to support the ongoing peace agreement in South Sudan, to ensure that the war-torn country gets material assistance at the appropriate time.
“To support the implementation of the revitalized agreement, China has provided a batch of food and material assistance to South Sudan, and active efforts are being made for their delivery,” said Chinese official.
The official urged the international community and the region to make more efforts to ensure the implementation of the agreement in accordance with the provisions of the R-ARCSS.
“The international community, the Security Council in particular, should provide greater help focusing on facilitating the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement by all parties,” Wu said.
“The international community should enhance communication with all parties, the government in particular, listen carefully to their opinions and suggestions and provide necessary funding, material, and technical support in political and security fields in light of the needs of the country,” he said.
South Sudan slipped into a civil war in December 2013 after violence erupted between forces loyal to South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit and those who were supporting the former deputy, Dr. Riek Machar.
