Dec 9th, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, Anthony Lino Makana has submitted his resignation to President Salva Kiir Mayardit to avert looming impeachment by the country’s members of Parliament.

“Following the recent move by the MPs to impeach Rt. Hon. Anthony Lino Makana which the SPLM caucus has to consider in a meeting chaired by the Chairman of the SPLM, Hon. Makana finally accepted to submit his resignation today,” said the Presidency.

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit commended the outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Makana for taking into account the resignation as demanded by MPs.

In June, South Sudanese lawmakers disagreed over a budget presentation for the year 2019/2020 and unpaid salaries.

Kiir urged the incoming Speaker to keep the two deputies if they were not implicated in what led to the resignation of Makana.

“President Kiir further urged the would-be new Speaker to consider retaining the two deputies when they are found to have not involved in what led into the resignation of the former Speaker Anthony Lino Makana. Otherwise, they would then be asked to also submit their resignation said the President.”

Makana has been the Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly of South Sudan since 2016.
