June 4, 2020 (SSNN) – A South Sudan businessman who was previously detained by the National Security Service (NSS) has formed a new rebel group to fight the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Kerbino Wol who was arrested by the NSS in April 2018 for allegedly conspiring against the government said in an interview with the VOA’s South Sudan In Focus that he and several other South Sudanese he didn’t name have formed a new movement.

Wol has called the new movement the “7th of October Movement” in memory of riots in 2018 in which he and others who were being detained by the NSS at the time took control of the NSS headquarters which is also known as Blue House.

“We are the 7th of October Movement which has been formed in South Sudan and today it is a very historical day in South Sudan,” Wol said.

Wol accused the government in Juba of injustice, suppression and failure and said the people of South Sudan, especially the youth, have been awakened by those practices of the government.

“The teams behind this group are young people of South Sudan that have finally been awakened by the suppression, the injustice and the failure of the leadership in the country. So they have taken the lead to liberate themselves from the oppression and the poor leadership in the country,” he added.

In June 2019, Kerbino was sentenced to 15 years in jail for charges including terrorism, insurgency and spying having been charged under article 57 of the National Security Act and articles 67-80-72-79 of the penal code.

Wol was eventually released from detention in January 2020 as part of the revitalized peace agreement which provided for the release of all political detainees from various centers in the country.
