Breaking: 30 civilians massacred, several others wounded as Misseriya armed men attack Abyei region

January 22nd, 2020 (SSNN)—About 30 civilians, including children, have been killed and several others injured in a deadly attack by carried out by armed men suspected to be from the Misseriya tribe.

According to several news sources, the attacks were carried out in one of the villages of the disputed Abyei region by armed men believed to be from Sudanese tribes.

“This morning at around 7:10, gunmen came and attacked Kolom area. The attackers killed 29 civilians including 9 children,” Kuol Alor Kuol, the head of the Abyei Administrative Area was quoted by told Radio Tamazuj as saying.

“22 homes have been burnt by the attackers, so this is what had happened in Abyei,” the chief said.

The authorities recounted that the attackers had kidnapped more than 10 children.

The authorities called upon the United Nation Interim Security Forces for Abyei (UNISFA) to beef up security in the area.

Abyei is located on the border between Sudan and South Sudan. It has been one of the disputed areas since the independence of South Sudan from Sudan in 2011.

On October 24 last year, during a UN briefing, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix urged South Sudan and Sudan leaders to finally make progress on the status of the disputed Abyei region.

“We witness an unprecedented opportunity to resolve the border related issues between Sudan and South Sudan,” Jean Pierre Lacroix told the UN Council.

Jean Pierre urged the African Union to convene peace talks between Sudan and South Sudan to resolve the final status of Abyei and other border issues.
