Bentiu community in Kenya urges members to support Nguen Manytuil
June 29, 2020 (SSNN) – The Bentiu community in Kenya is urging all its members to rally behind Governor Joseph Nguen Manytuil Wijang, who has been reappointed into the gubernatorial position on Monday by President Salva Kiir.
Kiir on Monday evening issued two republican decrees appointing governors for eight South Sudanese states including Unity, and three Greater Administrative Areas, but left behind Upper Nile and Jonglei states.
In a statement on Monday night, the Unity state community in Kenya called on its members to support the governor and commended President Salva Kiir Mayardit for what it said is an “expeditious” appointment of state governors.
“We write to commend his Excellency President, General Salva Kiir and First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar for their expeditious move to appoint state governors in South Sudan. This is a wonderful attempt worth applauding,” the community said in a statement signed by its leader Dak Buoth.
“We need to take a step forward together as one Nation, one people to achieve our defined objectives. You would recall the Liech Community Association in Kenya was among the last groups that petitioned an immediate appointment of the state governors simply because we were deeply concern with rampant insecurity in the country,” the community statement seen by South Sudan News Now further reads.
It further welcomed the “newly appointed governor of Unity State, Dr. Joseph Nguen Monytuil. On behalf of the Liech community Association in Kenya, we wish him good luck in tackling these daunting tasks of restoring peace and tranquility in our divided state and the neighboring regions.”
“We call on the majestic and peace-loving people of Unity State across political divides to generously support this new governor in his efforts to fulfill the mandate of restoring normalcy in our troubled region.
“The ideal formula for our forward-moving as people of one destiny is forgiveness and reconciliation. We had earlier on endorsed a different person for Unity State governorship, but now the chance goes to him, he also owes us unending support in propagating all the activities geared toward reconciling and reuniting our populace once and for all.”
Nguen has been the governor of Unity state since July 2013, after replacing now-vice-president Taban Deng Gai who is now the country’s vice-president and who previously served as First Vice President.
Critics say he has failed to end violence between rival communities in the state and with neighboring states such as Warrap and Lakes.
