July 8, 2020 (SSNN) – The Apadang community of the country’s Upper Nile state has finally accepted the nomination of General Johnson Olony for the governorship of Upper Nile state, days after rejection from a section of the community.

First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar last week nominated Olony for the governorship of the oil-rich northern state, but was not appointed because some members of the Apadang community expressed rejection of Olony’s appointment as governor.

Speaking to the media following a meeting with Machar this afternoon, members of the Apadang community led by Elijah Awuol,  said they “registered our unwavering support to Johnson Olony, or any other nominee to become the Governor in Upper Nile State.”

They emphasized their readiness to “work with Johnson Olony, if he becomes the Governor as decided by the leadership of the SPLM-IO.”

According to a statement by Machar’s office, the community leaders separately discussed with the First Vice President “a number of other issues including their would-be participation in the State government as well as at other levels and institutions of Government.”
