Akol rejects appointment of Abdelbagi, accuses Kiir of peace violations

February 24, 2020 (SSNN)–The leadership of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), an opposition group headed by Dr. Lam Akol, has rejected the recent appointment of Hussein Abdelbagi as the 5th Vice President, describing it as flagrant violations of the peace agreement.

“NDM would want to declare that it was not part of the decision to refer the matter to President Salva Kiir. And since decisions of SSOA are taken by unanimity it is not bound by the decision and its outcome,” the statement signed by the NDM spokesman David Lawrence Lual partly reads.

The opposition faction accused the Kiir administration of violating the terms of the peace agreement.

“And therefore the action taken by President Salva Kiir is a clear violation of Article 1.5.2 of the R-ARCSS,” the statement added.

In a letter dated February 20, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance submitted a list of five candidates, asking President Kiir to choose one nominee from the five leaders who were vying for the position of the 5th Vice President.

Hussein Abdelbagi Akol is a senior member of the South Sudan Patriotic Movement (SSPM), one of the signatory parties to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.
