VP Hussein Abdelbaggi’s father dies of COVID-19
June 6, 2020 (SSNN) – General Abdelbaggi Ayii Akol, the father of South Sudan vice-president Hussein Abdelbaggi who tested positive for coronavirus last month has reportedly died of COVID-19, the respiratory sickness caused by COVID-19.
Vice-president Hussein who is also the head of the National Taskforce on COVID-19 tested positive for the virus on May 27. He reportedly met his father the previous day at a Hotel in Juba where Hussein himself is being accommodated.
“Yes it is true. General Abdelbaggi Akol has died this morning at dawn at a local hospital here. He was infected with the corona[virus],” one government official who is attached to vice-president Hussein told South Sudan News Now from Juba.
“He had contact with Hussein the day before his COVID-19 test results were returned. I think this is how he contracted the virus,” the source added.
South Sudan has seen rise in case of COVID-19 in recent weeks and several senior South Sudan government officials including the First Vice President, Vice President James Wani Igga have tested positive for the virus.
Machar and his wife Angelina Teny have both tested negative for the virus after a second test was conducted by doctors. He is due to return to work next week, according to doctors.
