Updates: Murle Youth Lost More Than 500 guns in Uror Attack
May 20, 2020(SSNN) — Latest reports from South Sudan’s Uror county confirmed that the Murle youth, who attacked Lou-Nuer areas on Saturday, May 16, 2020, have incurred heavy losses in terms of lives, weapons and ammunitions.
Speaking to South Sudan News Now correspondent in Pieri, South Sudan, James Mabor, a frontline journalist, confirmed that 748 dead bodies of Murle youth and 521 guns have been recovered but the search continues;
“Here in Uror, we have counted 748 bodies of dead Murle youth and 521 guns but this information changes every few minutes as more bodies and guns are found” Mabor said.
“Every house we enter into, every bush we search, we find something, sometimes a dead body of a murle or a gun that has been abandoned. They have littered everywhere” He continued.
Other sources confirmed that the SPLA-IO army, led by the acting governor and deputy governor, have arrived in the area to boost security and conduct the search.
They believe that the search may take two to three days to sure the area.
“People do not feel secure yet. The murle youth are scattered everywhere and they have enough ammunitions. The ones that are seriously wounded and are hiding in the bushes post a great danger to the white army that are searching the areas” Said an SPLA-IO officer who is part of the search mission in the area.
The Murle youth, under the banner of Cobra which is a militia that was formerly recruited by Lt. Gen. David Yauyau, have planned these attacks for months and there is doubt if this will be the end of their offensives in Lou-nuer areas.
The Lou-nuer youth in the area said they have been vigilant as they were expecting these attacks on their areas and therefore it did not surprised them that the Murle Youth managed to penetrate to 4 villages in Uror county.
“They were organized and heavily equipped. Besides, they had the numbers to do enough damages, so we expected this” Said Tut, a white army fighter, who participated in fighting in Pieri.
Although it remains to be verified, South Sudan government and President Kiir’s envoy to Pibor are among the suspects who are believed to be arming the Murle youth;
“For those of us who have fought Murle youth for years, a murle gunman usually carry up to four bullets but these attackers had upto three magazines and each magazine carries 30 ammunitions. Therefore these people are armed somewhere” Said Gideon Tut who spoke on behalf of the White army.
“These were well planned attacks and this could not have been done without the knowledge of the government in Juba” he continued.
Similar speculations allege that a different group of Murle youth may attack Akobo through Ethiopian border.
