Oct 12th, 2019 (SSNN)-The U.S. Agency for International Development on Friday congratulated the Prime Minister of The Federal Republic of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, on being the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Mark Andrew Green, Director of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), affirmed his country’s commitment to helping the people of Ethiopia as they embark on taking steps towards democratic transformation.

“The award highlights Prime Minister Abiy’s “efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and, in particular, for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.” We join in celebration as Prime Minister Abiy is bestowed this prestigious award.”

Adding: “The United States remains fully committed to supporting Ethiopians as they implement their democratic and economic reforms and to play a vital role in the region.”

Speaking on the same development, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres congratulates Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abi Ahmed on receiving the 2019 Peace Prize after tremendous democratic reform in his country and beyond.

“I have said often that winds of hope are blowing ever stronger across Africa. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia is one of the main reasons why. His vision helped Ethiopia and Eritrea achieve a historic rapprochement, and I was honoured to witness the signing of the peace agreement last year,” said António.

The United Nations Secretary-General noted that the step taken by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abi Ahmed has set an example and will surely inspire other African leaders to follow in his footsteps.

“This milestone has opened up new opportunities for the region to enjoy security and stability, and Prime Minister Ahmed’s leadership has set a wonderful example for others in and beyond Africa looking to overcome resistance from the past and put people first.”
