UN chief urges S. Sudan’s unity govt to address tribal violence
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday highlighted the negative impact of climate change on world peace.
March 17th 2020 (SSNN) – As South Sudan enters transitional period, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has told the country’s leaders to address tribal violence.
This comes after president Salva Kiir appointed the long-awaited cabinet of the reconstituted transitional government of national unity.
Following the signing of the revitalized peace agreement in September 2018, fighting between the rival forces stopped across the country but intercommununal fighting continued in Lakes and Jonglei states.
In a statement, a spokesman for Guterres said the UN chief urged the leaders of South Sudan to prioritize the implementation of the security arrangements and to address the inter-communal conflict in the country.
“The Secretary-General calls upon the leaders of South Sudan to prioritize the implementation of transitional security arrangements, step up efforts to address intercommunal violence, fight impunity and focus on the delivery of essential services,” the statement by said.
“The Secretary-General reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to assist the parties in implementing the Agreement, in close coordination with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union,” the statement added.
