Nov 10th 2019 (SSNN)-The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, has announced an allocation of up to US$15 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) in an effort to bolster humanitarian assistance to flood-affected communities currently being displaced by devastating floods across the country’s 27 counties.

The UN office announced that, “The allocation will be used to meet the life-saving needs of 620,000 flood-affected people, including emergency shelter and non-food items, health, food security and livelihoods, and water, hygiene and sanitation, as well as logistics support.”

The United Nations said another $ 10 million would be added to help ease the humanitarian crisis facing millions of people affected by the floods.

“An additional US$10 million is being allocated from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund for immediate assistance in the worst-hit areas.
Since July, more than 908,000 people have been affected by unusually heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding.”

Since September, South Sudan has been engulfed heavy floods affecting 27 areas, and leaving more than 3 million people in urgent need of emergency assistance in those flood-affected areas.

Regarding the continuing deteriorating humanitarian needs, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said that US $ 61.5 million is urgently needed to save lives and ensure the continuity of the response in South Sudan.
