UK calls on South Sudan’s gov’t, opposition parties to agree on outstanding issues
Oct 8th, 2019 (SSNN)-The United Kingdom has called upon South Sudan’s peace partners to agree on the number of states and finalize security arrangements before the formation of a Transitional Government of National Unity.
“We are still waiting for a discussion to take place around the number of states [in South Sudan] during the transitional period,” said the British Ambassador to South Sudan, Christopher Trot.
Last month, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit threatened that he would press ahead with the formation of a unity government if the, SPLM/A-IO, doesn’t return by November 12th.
“While we recognized absolutely a significant amount of progress has been achieved since the signing of the agreement… we have still not yet seen the creation of a national unified army, even a small number of troops.
The UK diplomat explained that the international community would like to see South Sudan’s peace partners come to a solution on how to resolve outstanding issues.
“We would expect the parties through a dialogue to come to an agreement amongst themselves into how much of what was anticipated in the peace agreement is actually delivered on in advance of November 12, and what could be perhaps left to be completed beyond the 12th of November when we have our new transitional government in place. We can then put the economy on a more solid footing, we can ensure people start to see accountability and justice.”
On Monday, the leadership of the main armed opposition faction said it will not be part of the long-awaited unity government if the Parties fail to reach a consensus on the number of states, and security arrangements.
