Nov 20th, 2019 (SSNN)-The Dawn Newspaper has been concerned about the week-long detention of its Editor in Chief, Emmanuel Monychol Akop who has been kidnapped and detained by South Sudan’s National Security agents in the past few weeks in Juba.

This is not the first time the Editor-in-Chief of The Dawn Newspaper, Emmanuel Monychol Akop has been arrested by the National Security authorities.

Last month, Monychol was arrested by the National Security Service after criticizing Awut Deng Acuil’s inappropriate outfits.

“It’s [been]14 days and counting since The Dawn Newspaper woke up to the news of the disappearance of its Editor in Chief, Emmanuel Monychol Akop This came on the back of an earlier arrest by the National Security Services in mid-October,” the Dawn Newspaper said.

The Dawn Newspaper confirmed that, Emmanuel is being arbitrarily detained at the National Security detention facility but has not been formally charged with recognizable criminal offenses.

“The Dawn has been quiet over the past two weeks hoping and waiting, two weeks in which it had been difficult to contemplate the fate of Emmanuel. It has now come to the knowledge of the newspaper that he is being held at the National Security Services headquarters, and without being formally charged.”

The Dawn Newspaper is one of the print media outlets in the country.

South Sudan remains as one of the unsafe countries for local and foreign journalists.

Earlier this month, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned the government for its repeated crackdown on journalists in South Sudan.

The condemnation came after the government had expelled a French journalist, Bastien Renouil, the France 24 TV news channel’s East Africa correspondent.
