Oct 14th, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit is expected on Monday to preside over peace talks between various Sudanese rebel groups and members of Sudan’s Sovereign Council in the country’s capital Juba.

“Tomorrow’s meeting is to mark the launching of Sudan’s peace talks,” said South Sudan’s Press Secretary, Ateny Wek Ateny in a statement on Saturday.

On Sunday, member of Sudan’s Sovereign Council led by Sudanese Deputy Chairman General Mohamed Hamdan widely known as (Hemeti) met with President Salva Kiir at the State House in Juba.

Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who was appointed in August in a landmark power-sharing agreement between the military and pro-democracy protesters is due to arrive in Juba on Monday for the official opening ceremony of the Tentative Inaugural Programme of Sudan’s Peace Talks.

In September, the Sudanese opposition groups and the ruling Sovereign Council reached a peace deal and a road map for further meetings.

Following the overthrow of former Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for decades, the Sudanese government, led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, enjoys the support of the international community as it ended one the oppressive military rules in Sudan.

Since Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok became head of a civilian-led transitional government, pressure has mounted from the international community, urging the US government to remove Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
