SPLA-IO officer killed in SSPDF attack in Western Equatoria
June 19, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, SPLA-IO, is saying that an attack by South Sudan’s army on its base in Western Equatoria state has left a senior officer and at least ten (10) soldiers dead.
The attack, one SPLA-IO officer said, took place on Wednesday in Tambura County after a joint attack by the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) and a team of local militiamen on a cantonment site housing SPLA-IO troops.
“The SSPDF has attacked our base in a clear violation of the revitalized peace agreement,” the senior SPLA-IO officer told South Sudan News Now from Juba on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
“Ten soldiers have been killed in that attack and also Brigadier Gen. Santo Natali Ali was killed in the surprise attack,” the official said.
Army spokesman Lul Ruai Koang did not respond to an email from South Sudan News Now.
