Spiritual leader killed in revenge attack after failing to pay blood-wit
February 6th, 2020 (SSNN)—One of the Bul’s spiritual leaders, Pey Karekna, has been killed in a retaliatory attack after failing to pay blood compensation in Mankien, an elderly member of the community said on Thursday.
“It is very unfortunate to hear that one of Bul spiritual leaders Pey Karekna was killed yesterday evening around 8PM in Mankien town by some armed youth of Cieng Thiih section in revenge for what happened last year when spiritual leader Pey Karekna moved with his shrine armed youth and attacked Cieng Thiih youth at Keay area killing ten men and wounding many others on Cieng Thiih side in an incident which was sparked by a case of the wife of the Spiritual leader who had an adulterous relationship with one of Cieng Thiih youth,” said Stephen Buay Rolnyang.
Buay believes that the incident was triggered because the local authorities had made no effort to settle the case by giving blood money to the family members of the victim.
“I think the local authorities didn’t settle the case fairly in order to pay for the blood compensation and others as required traditionally, and to make the matters worse, the local authorities released the spiritual leader under detention and allowed him to move freely before the case could be settled properly, and this prompted Cieng Thiih youth to take the law into their own hands by killing the spiritual leader which is very sad indeed,” he added.
He called on local authorities to address the issue as a matter of urgency before it gets out of control.
“I advise that the local authorities to contain the situation before it could escalate further and settle the case once and for all. On behalf of my family and my own behalf, I offer our heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, relatives, people of Bul and people of South Sudan for this great loss.”
