South Sudan’s Main Opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar will not travel to Juba – according to an opposition official.
July 14, 2019(SSNN) — The leadership of South Sudan’s main opposition group, SPLM-IO has categorically denied alleged reports that the Chairman of the SPLM(IO) Dr. Riek Machar is expected to travel to Juba by the end of this month.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia in an interview, Manassey Zindo, a member of the Political Bureau of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (IO) and Chairman of the National Committee for Youth empowerment and Sports, disclosed that Machar will not travel to Juba by the end of this month unless his conditions set in relation to his current status of his house arrest imposed by the Council Ministers of the Intergovernmental on Development Authority (IGAD) are fully met.
“No, Dr. Riek is not traveling to Juba by the end of this month. He only responded to an invitation extended to him for a face to face talk with President Salva. He is willing to travel to Juba, however, he gave conditions under which he can travel to Juba.” said Zindo, SPLM-IO’s official.
On Match 26th 2018, the Council of Ministers of IGAD held its 61th Extraordinary Sessions on the situation in South Sudan, of which the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) issued a resolution, resolving that the house arrest of the Chairman of SPLM(IO) be lifted, however such a resolution has not been fully approved by the East Africa regional bloc, GAD.
Earlier this month, the SPLM leadership expressed interest in participating in face-to-face peace talks with the Government, however, the main opposition group suggested that the organization of such a face-to-face meeting would not be organized by the Transitional National Unity (TGONU but the Council of Ministers of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
