South Sudan: Three killed in road ambush after NAS threatened to attack Juba
May 12, 2020 (SSNN) – Three people have been killed and five others have been injured during an ambush in Central Equatoria state’s Yei River County, government officials there said.
A Yei county official who spoke exclusively to South Sudan News Now (SSNN) said the incident happened just three miles outside Yei town.
He said the incident took place at a road leading to the capital Juba.
“There was an incident this morning. It happened in the road leading to Juba just three miles away from here (Yei). We could not know who attacked but I think they are rebels,” he said without identifying the attackers.
This attack came a few days after South Sudan’s National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirilo Swaka threatened to attack the capital Juba after suffering losses during last week’s offensive against their position by the South Sudan army.
On Tuesday, documents published by the independent Nyamilepedia exposed NAS’s fundraising initiative in a bid to fund a planned onslaught against the capital where President Salva Kiir is based and the army is headquartered.
