In his remarks during the Ceremony, H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit said working for peace is not an easy task that can be achieved overnight but through dealing with many challenges, making painful decisions and having tolerance to hear the other side.
“H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit urged all South Sudanese and Sudanese to rededicate the efforts at individual and collective levels to overcome the various challenges in order to pave the way for a total peace in the two sisterly Countries.” The President’s press office said.
H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit applauded African Television Union for honoring him with the first peace award.
The lead mediators, Tut Gatluak Manime, and Dr. Dhieu Mathok, Deputy Chairperson of Sudan Sovereign Council Hamdan Dagalo, and Mohammed Hassan Osman Altaishi were also given awards for their active roles in the Sudanese peace process.
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in July 2011 but went back to war with itself in 2013 which lasted another six years.
Despite relative calm in South Sudan for the last one year, there is little hope for election at the end of the transitional period as the peace agreement has not been implemented as signed.
