South Sudan First Family Weds Itself

South Sudan’s family of President Kiir held a colorful wedding at the country’s presidential palace on Sunday evening, September 1st, 2019.

The wedding, which brings together the family of Salva Kiir and his in-laws was between Lual Marine Akook, a nephew to president Kiir, and bride Mia Ayen Gregory, a niece to president’s wife Mary Ayen.

The colorful wedding was attending by friends and government officials including Taban Deng Gai, the First Vice President.

Like other weddings featuring Kiir’s daughters, the wedding between president Kiir’s nephew and his in-laws was highly criticized on social media.

While some critics believe that the wedding demonstrate nepotism, tribalism and corruption in South Sudan,  others criticize how president Kiir used national resources and the state house for his own person needs.

“As per as we know, the two couples did not meet and fall in love like other young people, their wedding is an arranged marriage. This was done by the First Lady herself who forced her niece to marry within her family” Said Bol Mayar who identifies as a family friend.

“The two families have been involved in strings of corruption over the years, they have enough corruption money to do their wedding anywhere but they should not litter the presidential palace with all their nonsenses. Who cares about weddings anyway when millions of people are starving” Said Chol Mayom on his social media account.

“This is corruption, incest and nepotism all in one. These kids can’t marry in other cultures, they are related.” Said John Tang,

“This is what Salva Kiir and his family will be remembered for. While millions of South Sudanese are dying because of Kiir imposed war, Salva Kiir has conducted more weddings in J1 than peace” He continued.
