South Sudan confirms 36 new COVID-19 cases

May 10, 2020 (SSNN) — South Sudan’s national ministry of health on Sunday reported that 36 more people – most of whom are South Sudanese – tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

This brings the overall number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 156.

Speaking to reports on Sunday evening in Juba, Dr. Richard Lako, the Director General for Planning and Budget at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Richard Lako, said the confirmation came after the ministry tested a total number of 282 people who were in contact with those infected by the virus early.

“The ministry of health is now following the 154 cases and the total number of confirmed cases so far in South Sudan is 156,” Lako who is also a member of the high-level taskforce said.

He revealed that most of the victims are South Sudanese adding that few foreigners among those tested on Sunday includes two Ugandans, one Kenyan and a Congolese national, all of whom were spotted crossing via southern borders.

“The taskforce also emphasized the continuation of collection of samples from five zones of Juba and the data has to be aggregate accordingly,” said Lako.

He further said the high-level taskforce has approved the purchase of five refrigerators to improve sample collection and boost storage by the public health emergency laboratory.
