July 23, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s chief of defense forces, general Johnson Juma Akot has said that his country does not have external threats urging members of the unified forces to work to bring permanent peace in the war-torn country.

The top South Sudan army official was speaking during a visit to Maridi training camp for the unified forces in the country’s Western Equatoria state on Saturday. He was accompanied by the minister of defense Angelina Teny.

General Okot made the remarks during a visit to Maridi training camps for the unified forces in Western Equatoria State on Saturday.

Akot urged the army trainee to exercise professionalism saying they would be the first professional army in the country because the former rebel group, SPLA, has not been transformed following the independence.

“You are the foundation of South Sudan’s army. Since the rebellion up to date, we have not had time to reform our army. This is now the bases and foundation of our new army,” said Okot.

“Everyone is now for peace since we don’t have any external threats. It is one of your duties to fight and bring peace.”
