Secretary Pompeo’s Meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy

February 18, 2020(SSNN) -—- According to the United States spokesperson, Morgan Ortagus, the Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Feb 18, 2020.
Secretary Pompeo reiterated the United States’ support for Ethiopia’s historic political and economic reforms and discussed opportunities for increased partnership.
The Secretary and the Prime Minister also discussed the importance of organizing free and fair elections later this year.
Secretary Pompeo thanked Prime Minister Abiy for his leadership in the Horn of Africa and for Ethiopia’s peacekeeping deployments to Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan.
According to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, during their discussion, the two leaders raised a number of bilateral and regional issues.
“In addition to strengthening relations between their two countries, they explored in detail the ongoing holistic reform taking place in Ethiopia.” Dr. Abiy’s office reiterates.
“They also focused on areas of interest for further cooperation including ways of ensuring sustainable peace and security in the Horn of Africa.” The report continued
“An agreement has been reached regarding the strengthening of the holistic and ongoing reform in Ethiopia to which the United States Government plans to provide substantial financial support.” the report from Dr. Abiy’s office stated.
