Sarah Nyanath and Others Call For Replacement of Riek Machar and Madam Angelina Teny

A South Sudanese civil rights activist and a member of the SPLM/A in Opposition Sarah Nyanath Yong calls for replacement of the SPLM/A Chairman and Commander-in-Chief, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

Over the past two weeks, Miss Yong has been rallying disgruntled intellectuals on social media behind her back to support her call for replacement of Dr. Riek Machar Teny and madam Angelina Teny.

According to insiders and a recent investigation conducted by the South Sudan News Now over social media, majority of disgruntled loyalists cite unfair treatment either in term of military ranks promotion or how each of them lost his or her previous position in the part hierarchy in chapters in diaspora.

Over the past one month, South Sudan News Now filed a comprehensive report featuring disgruntled politicians and activists comprising of Sarah Nyanath, Nyajany Dei Weang, Thalage Ajondit, Kuajien Lual Wechtuor, Anter Chuol Thian, Thabor Deng Ding, Bol Both Brown, David Mai Tang and a few others.

In her lengthy social media criticism, Nyanath cites the following points:

Chairman is detained
Chairman has failed in providing logistic
Chairman has failed diplomatically
Chairman empowers the enemy by allowing the operation of the oil production without security share for IO in the KPA
R-ARCSS compromised the desired reform agenda in R-ARCSS specially power and security arrangements
Term of office elapsed as per SPLM IO constitution
Failed the democratic exercise in the moment
Chairman high level of nepotism inclinations that is further weakening the organization
Chairman resort into violating of SPLM IO policies and working guidelines he has reduced the organization into private company.
No tangible result since onset of conflict and the organization is rolling down the hill.
Chairman disempowered SPLM IO organs by design.
Chairman practice and condone corruption undemocratic governance.
Chairman promotes and encourages dishonesty, propaganda and monopoly aimed to incite comrades.
Chairman apparently compromised SPLM IO positions in a naïve believe that he will be released from his confinement

According to Sarah Nyanath, Dr. Riek Machar can be removed either democratically through the party systems or by force through the military citing that the SPLM IO legal and working documents including the Nasir conference resolutions, the IO constitution, code of conduct, internal regulation and manifesto allows for replacement for the chairman.

” SPLM IO Secretary General requires to call for general assembly, because the moment as to undergo another democratic exercise based on its constitution for all levels including NLC and PB” She continued.

Asking if replacement of Dr. Machar can bring chaos, Hon. Nyanath believes that there can never be chaos, saying:

“There can never be any division or chaos but this are unfounded allegations. It’s members of the SPLM IO who developed the documents to governed the organization and that is why the call for replacement is vital because the Chairman is a violator of the organization guidelines, founding resolution, manifesto and the constitution. He is the one who disqualify himself and members must hold him accountable.” Nyanaath said.

“No mandated SPLMIO leader carder is immune or above this provisions, and if failed to perform to as expected, members have the right to appraise accordingly” Nyanath added.

Who is Sarah Nyanath,

Hon. Sarah Nyanath is a long term member of the SPLM/A. She was among the South Sudanese students who were sent to Cuba in mid 1980s and has served in former Upper Nile State as the deputy chairperson of the Upper Nile legislative Assembly and Minister of Social Development something that did not translate to how much attention shes receives among the leadership and supporters of the SPLM/A(IO).

Since she joined the SPLM/A(IO), Sarah Nyanaath, who is known to be vocal and controversial was not well received by her people and so far she hasn’t secured any high ranking position within the ranks and files of the SPLM/A in Oppositions – something she blames mostly on Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

In December last year, Nyanath secured an unilateral invitation from the office of President Salva Kiir to attend the peace celebration in Juba and since then her connections continued to expand.

Nyanaath remains in Juba but she hasn’t openly declared her intention to defect to the government or whether she would return to the bush – but her latest public criticisms leave her loyalty to the SPLM/A(IO) in question.

Nyanaath’s public criticism has motivated young politicians, who lost elections in various SPLM/A(IO) chapters in Diaspora, to join the debate on social media.

Those who joined the debates include Nyajany Dei Weang, who lost elections twice in Victoria-Australia, but continued to cling to power. Miss. Nyajany recently returned to impose herself as the chapter leader although she lost the elections three months earlier and initially accepted to step down. She blames and criticizes Dr. Riek Machar, SPLM-IO representative to Australia, national coordinator and head of the election committee for losing the elections.

Other chapters leaders, who lost elections include Simon Tongyik Dahel, who lost elections to Bol Dei in Tennessee, United States, in earlier 2015 – something he said he will never forget nor forgive Dr. Riek Machar and the former Representative to the US, Hon. Reath Muoch Tang. Elder Dahel is very critical of Dr. Riek Machar’s failures and calls on him to resign.

Other critics include David Mai Tang Ngor, who lost the SPLM/A(IO) Youth League elections to Dabuol Ruon in earlier 2015 and Thabor Deng Ding who lost an interim advisory position at the same time.

The three comrades Simon Tongyik, David Mai, Thabor Ding, and other interim chapter leaders in the United States wanted Dr. Riek Machar at the time to remove Reath Muoch Tang – something that did not happen to their expectations. Although Hon. Reath, a former Member of Parliament, was eventually removed, some of these chapter leaders and members call on Riek Machar to step down or be removed.

Dr. Kuajien Lual Wechtuor, a law PhD candidate and the SPLM/A(IO) representative to Germany, has been battling senior leadership over alleged misconduct, corruption and personal grievances with his boss, Ambassador Stephen Par Kuol, the National Committee Chairperson of the SPLM/A(IO) Foreign Affairs. Attempts to get his boss removed by Dr. Riek Machar since 2015 have not been successful.

Dr. Kwajien is also fighting over seniority among the Lou-Nuer politicians, which affects his interpersonal relations with his fellow Lou-Nuer politicians, causing isolation and criticism.

Other critics include members of security organs that include Anter Chuol Thian and Thalage Ajondit, who were not promoted alongside their colleagues.

While Anter has been residing in Cairo-Egypt during the conflict and was not promoted to high ranks when his colleagues, who fought during the J1 battle, were promoted, Thalage resides in Australia.

In a lengthy 4-paged article, published on social media, Col. Thalange, who is also a non-active member of the Security Arrangement Committee, wrote 10 points on why Madam Angelina Teny must be removed from leading the Security and Defense Committee. He stated the following:

The appointment of Madam Angelina is a clear violation of the 2015 Constitution of the SPLM/A(IO) because it is a pure practice of nepotism and also it contradicts to our vision and core principles. Since Madam Angelina was appointed in 2015 as a head of Security and Defense Committee and Strategic Defense Security Review(SDSR) of SPLM/A(IO), it was the time anti-nepotism critics feel disillusioned about your leadership decisions.
From the 2015 till now, Madam Angelina has failed to meet people’s expectations, therefore she cannot continue to hold this noble position. In this critical period, the Head of Security and Defense should be given to a professional Veteran who is competent, have knowledge and understanding of the world’s modern security and military approaches and strategies.
Since Madam Angelina was appointed in 2015, she has been equidistantly building herself to have excessive and unlimited powers in the Movement. In fact, now she is the most influential factor making all minor and major decisions on policy issues in the Movement. She is also using her position to undermine the right of ordinary members and interfering in other Committees affairs including in diaspora.
The division of executive powers between you Mr. Chairman and your wife Madam Angelina has centralized and/or jeopardize the separation of powers between Movement’s organs. Currently, the lack of separation of powers is affecting the role and work of other Committees and Departments. Consequently, the person who runs and controls the show is Madam Angelina herself.
Madam Angelina is using her position to empower her family members. As a result, currently, there is a bunch of your family members in the top position in the Movement. This move is causing a great concern among members and supporters but people do not want to speak against Madam Angelina’s unceasing interference in leadership affairs because she is the First Lady of the Movement.

Public Reaction:

The call to remove Dr. Riek Machar has caused public outcry over the social media. While majority of the SPLM supporters argue that it would be wrong to replace Dr. Riek in the middle of the war, a few critics support the calls to replace Dr. Riek Machar.

” Its totally retarded report from Nyanaath to the dump hears . It can only be considered by political schizophrenics birds of South Sudan running from side to kissing politicians behind. Nyanaath is suffering conspiracy to kill all Nuer. We all suffer when we loose someone in the family. Let her cry for one loose life instead she crying for more Nuer to die in the hands of enemies, that’s satanic crying disciple families of Dinka and Nuer that are killing innocent civilians in South Sudan.” Said Latjor Tuel.

“i remember her video and other women who came from juba and went to addis ababa to convince Machar after Nuer children, women etc were butchered by her boss kiir and jieng council of elders, i saw her crying as if she meant to weep for NUER death, in few days she left with other women to juba and left a daughter of Bona Malual who is now a member of jieng council of elders, to stay in io, point here is that this woman called nyanath did great damage on NUER in general, her name nyanath doesn’t fit her at all, second despite all weaknesses we know about Machar, SS crisis is ongoing even if Machar may show up in juba tomorrow, this game is real, nobody knows who will be a winner amongst all rivals in SS as dust of storm still hanging over SS, let Machar, Kiir and jieng council of elders play it out” Said J.W. Kwek.

“This is a nonsense calls from outsiders, many regrets calling for iO chairman to be replaced. I don’t think those pretenders to succeed in whatsoever they dreams, unless they turned angles or supernatural. Nothings will change Dr. Machar, because their no any points can let all loyalists turn their beliefs and objectives. Those who called are duoble standard and agents of juba regime. The internet warrior’s for change are just confused. Our unfinshed journey is still on. Please your thinking it’s outside the box. Find your core deseas medicine.” Said James Makuach Kutey.

Attempts to remove Dr. Riek Machar in the past by a group of military generals, some elders and politicians like Taban Deng and Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth,who were backed by Salva Kiir government in 2016, failed.
