Oct 14th, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit discussed the progress made in the implementation of the R-ARCSS with the Interim Chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring & Evaluation Commission, H.E Amb. Lt. Gen. A. Njoroge at the State House on Sunday.

According to an official source, President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Chairman of the JMEC tried to address issues relating to security arrangements, and disbursement of funding to expedite the cantonment process.

“Ambassador Njoroge also discussed the enactment of the laws already submitted by the National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC), agreement on allocation of ministerial portfolios and the submission to the NCAC a list of Parties’ nominees to the Transitional National Legislation Assembly,” the statement said on Sunday.

The statement further noted that the head of the Joint Monitoring Commission (JMEC) raised a number of outstanding issues, including the number of states and possible deployment of VIP Protection Forces as enshrined in the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

“Njoroge also raised the resolution of the number & boundaries of the States, training/deployment of VIP protection forces and the enactment of the Constitutional Amendment Bill, as key sticking issues that need quick resolution.”

In 2018, South Sudan’s government and armed/ unarmed opposition groups signed a peace deal in an attempt to end years of violence, but the implementation of the peace agreement has been slow, raising fears the country may return to another conflict if peace is not fully implemented.
