NDM nominates secretary-general for Jonglei state governor
June 23, 2020 (SSNN) – The National Democratic Movement (NDM) led by Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin has said in a brief state this afternoon that it has nominated its secretary-general, Mahjuob Biel Turuk for the governorship of Jonglei state.
The decision by the NDM follows a decision by President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar to divide the states for the parties ending a deadlock which has been ongoing for a duration of four months.
Based on that Kiir-Machar agreement, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), to which the National Democratic Movement (NDM) is a member, was given the governorship of Jonglei state.
Although some SSOA leaders rejected the outcome, Dr. Lam Akol, the secretary-general of the opposition consortium and its security chief, General Bapiny Manytuil, welcomed the decision and called for the timely appointment of state governors.
In a statement this morning, Dr. Lam officially confirmed reports that his group nominated Mahjuob for the governorship of Jonglei state.
“This is to confirm that the National Democratic Movement (NDM) has officially nominated its Secretary-General, Cde Mahjuob Biel Turuk, to the position of Governor of Jonglei State which is allocated to SSOA as per R-ARCSS,” Akol said.
“As you will recall only three organizations of SSOA have not been represented so far in RTGoNU. These are NDM, SSLM, and FDP. We hope that all of us will see that this will be where NDM could lead the contribution of SSOA and others in running this State,” the statement added.
