January 24th, 2020 (SSNN)—Residents of Munuki neighborhood have been in a state of panic after an electricity meter-box caught fire earlier today, according to several residents interviewed by SSNN.

“I saw black smoke billowing from a utility pole when we were coming out from a vehicle,” an eyewitness said on Friday.

South Sudan launched its first phase of a 100-megawatt power plant project late last year in an attempt to supply electricity to the nation’s capital, Juba and other surrounding areas.

Last week, the Ministry of Energy and Dams said it was “working on the rollout of public/private partnerships to bring power to regional cities after the success of Juba grid project.”

Since it attained independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan has one of the lowest electricity access with over 90 % of its 12 million population lacking access to electricity . More than 70 % of businesses in South Sudan depend on diesel – powered generators to operate , while most families rely on cheap kerosene to light up their homes.
