Mayiik Ayii denied visa to return to United States
June 27, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan former presidential affairs minister, Mayiik Ayii Deng has been denied a visa to return to the United States, where he holds citizenship, officials familiar with the matter told South Sudan News Now.
The attempt by Mayiik to return to the United States comes weeks after his removal from the ministry by President Salva Kiir over corruption allegations that surrounded the Juba-Bahr el Ghazal high-way.
Speaking to South Sudan News Now today, a South Sudan government official working at the embassy of the United States in Juba said Mayiik had requested a visa for United State and to be given a seat in flights organized by the US embassy to evacuate citizens who wish to return to the US during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The former minister of presidential affairs Mayiik Ayii Deng came to the embassy a few days ago. He requested a visa to return to the US,” the official said.
The official said Mayiik also informed the embassy that he would be carrying a “large” amount of money with him during the flight but was told that he will not be given the visa because of citizenship issues and was told that a court case by a girlfriend was also awaiting him.
“He was told that the visa will not be given to him because of citizenship issues including working for a foreign government which is against the US citizenship law. Apart, he was informed that his former girlfriend who he left pregnant has given birth and has since applied for child support and a court case was also awaiting him,” the official added.
