Machar, wife finally recover from COVID-19

June 2, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has finally recovered from COVID-19, senior SPLM-IO officials said today.

Machar who is also the chairperson of the main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, said late last month that he and his wife Angelina Teny who is also the minister of defense tested positive for respiratory disease which is caused by the novel coronavirus.

The two have since quarantined as recommended by the World Health Organization.

Speaking to South Sudan News Now (SSNN) today, a senior member of the SPLM-IO said Machar and his wife have recovered from the virus and were awaiting to return back to offices.

The source said Machar would stay at his residence for another one week to make sure that the virus has left and then he will return to his office.

“I am very happy to inform you that the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny and the minister of defense have recovered from coronavirus,” the senior opposition official said on condition of anonymity from Juba.

“What he will do now is that he will return to work. But before that, he will stay at home for another week before returning to work,” the official further added.

Several South Sudan sen9ior government officials have tested positive for the coronavirus disease.

They includes vice presidents James Wani Igga and Hussein Abdelbaggi. Others includes the minister of information Michael Makuei Lueth.
