Machar leaves Khartoum for Vatican meeting
April 8th 2019 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s former First Vice President and leader of the main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, Dr. Riek Machar Teny has left the Sudanese capital Khartoum this morning for the spiritual retreat in the Vatican aimed at confidence-building between him and President Salva Kiir Mayardiit, official have confirmed.
Kiir in March visited the Vatican where he met Pope Francis who later on invited him, and other opposition leaders for a spiritual retreat that is aimed at confidence-building between the arch rivals who have been leading separate forces in the ongoing conflict.
Machar’s departure came shortly after South Sudan’s First Vice President, Taban Deng Gai, left the capital Juba heading to the Vatican ahead of President Salva Kiir Mayardiit who is expected in the Vatican early on Tuesday.
“Yes Machar is leaving for the Vatican and we will update you in the next few minutes,” the source told the South Sudan News Now.
