Machar leaves for Khartoum, after attending consultative meetings in Juba
December 24th, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s main opposition leader and First-Vice President Designate Dr. Riek Machar Teny has left for the Sudanese capital Khartoum, an opposition official said earlier today.
“The Chairman and Commander-in-Chief, Dr. Riek Machar and his accompanying delegation left this afternoon for Sudan,” the official confirmed.
On Monday, South Sudan’s President of Salva Kiir Mayardit, Opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny and the Deputy Chairperson of the Sudanese Sovereign Council Gen. Mohmed Hamdan Hemeti met at the State and discussed the progress of the implementation of the peace agreement.
South Sudan’s government and opposition groups signed a peace agreement in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in September 2018, raising a glimpse of hope for an end to years of the country’s protracted civil war.
However, in the face of hope for an end to the conflict, the implementation of the peace agreement has faced formidable hurdles, forcing the government and opposition groups to extend the formation of a unity government twice.
Last month, civil society groups called on the international community, especially the Troika countries, the United Nations Security Council and IGAD to put pressure on the Parties to overcome and implement pre-transitional activities.
